an ode to brown eyes 🤎👁️

My husband, Robbie, has gray-blue eyes and mine are chestnut brown.

When I was pregnant with my daughter, everyone kept expressing how much they hoped she’d be born with his blue eyes.

She came out with chestnut eyes… MY eyes.

And then came the comments: the visible disappointment “awww man!” the wish for the future “well hopefully your next one comes out blonde with blue eyes)

(… I mean let’s not even get into the micro aggressions and Eurocentric beauty standards getting pushed here 🙈)

I want my daughter to grow up empowered and proud of her big brown eyes… to know they carry the same value and beauty as any other color! 🤎💙💚

they’re the same chocolate eyes that blinked at me in the NICU as if to say “hello there… I am yours, and you are mine”

the cocoa crescents that crinkle up with mischief when she does something that makes us all laugh

the caramel orbs that glow with pride when she accomplishes something new for the first time

Like Van Morrison said… “you’re my brown-eyed girl” and to me there’s no more beautiful thing 🤎✨
