To know my dad was to know a man full of beautiful contradictions…

He was stubborn and fiery. But also sensitive and soft-hearted. He felt the weight of the world’s sadness, but he could crack up a whole room just by making a face.

He was a brilliant intellectual and respected gastroenterologist … but of course he’d still joke and say “This is the finger that got you through private college!” (I learned the word “colonoscopy” at a very young age…)

I mean… that was Dad. He taught me the value of discipline and putting in the work, but also to not take life too seriously.

He was a man of many passions - fishing, classical music, old Italian movies, playing bridge, rooting for the underdog (go Cubs!) but most importantly he loved his 5 kids.

He was charismatic and charming and playful. A captivating storyteller with a mischievous twinkle in his eye. With him, life was never boring.

But of course Dad wasn’t just there for comedic relief. He was my go to sounding board for advice.  Back when I was having a “quarter life crisis” at a crossroads in my career: Dad offered his wisdom through a story.

He called to tell me how he and my Mom went out for a drive and got completely off-track somewhere. After a bunch of wrong turns, they stumbled upon an empanada shop - a hidden gem. It wasn’t where they meant to go, but it was the best part of their day. He reminded me how even when you’re feeling lost and unsure - sometimes, the most meaningful parts of life aren’t planned - they’re the little detours waiting for you if you’re open to finding them.

I am the youngest. My dad had me when he was 53, so he lived a lotttt of life beforehand. I knew there would be a limit on our time together… but how LUCKY am I that I got 35 years to hear his laugh, to squeeze his hand… to be his little “Boolie” 💗

This loss is profound, and right now life feels like we’re driving on that unfamiliar road… but I’m holding on to what Dad taught me: if I just keep my eyes open - there will be glimmers of hope, those moments of unexpected joy that catch you off guard and remind you to keep going…

There’ll be more empanada shops along the way. ✨

I love you dad. I’ll be seeing you… 🕊️
